      - Watertown Re-Union, Wed., Aug. 25, 1886: It is with sincere regret that these obituary lines are penned as a slight tribute to the memory of our oldest as well as most respected citizen, John Walling, who died at the residence of his granddaughter, Mrs. L. W. Day, on Tuesday, Aug. 10, after a long and painful illness which he bore with a christian spirit from the time he was taken sick until he was called to rest. The funeral services were held at the residence of L. W. Day Aug. 12, and were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Hunt of Adams, and Rev. Mr. Clark, pastor of the M.E. church of this place of which Mr. Walling was an active member nearly his whole life. Mr. Walling was born at Quebec June 12, 1798 and came here when a young man and married Miss Harriet Sloman, who survives him. They celebrated their golden wedding about 10 years ago. He was a merchant tailor and was in business at this place nearly 60 years and was the oldest member in the Masonic Order, which conducted the last services at the grave. In concluding, all we can say is that Sackets Harbor has lost a true, honest, christian citizen and it will be a long, long time before the always good natured, smiling countenance of Mr. Walling is forgotten. To his loving and devoted help mate who has spent so many happy years with him and other relatives who are left to mourn his demise, we extend our heartfelt sympathy.

      - John Walling and wife Harriet are buried in the Sackets Harbor, NY cemetery with a headstone.

      - Research Note: There are various Wallings in the Gouverneur, NY area born the same time period as John. All of them (Joshua Walling, 1796-1842; Samual Walling, 1794-1865; Almon Walling, 1791-1858; and William Walling, 1798-1878) are children of Archelaus and Hannah Walling who was born in Rhode Island, and is unrelated to John.
