  • Notes
    • - Ontario, Canada, Nov. 19, 1871, John Junior Thayer, born of W.R. Thayer and Harriet Rehor; father is shoemaker; Division: Iroquois; County: Stormont.

      - 1880: John, 9, resides with family on Huson St, Toledo, OH.

      - 1895: John is shown in the Toledo, OH city directory working as a barber at 133 St. Clair, and residing at 731 Indiana Ave.

      - 1900: John Thayer and Adelia Thayer, barber, reside 85 King St. with his mother, Harriet. John Thayer had a basement barber shop on Ford Street near Catherine St. John, b. Nov. 1871, age 28, married with 2 children, born Michigan, father born NY, mother born NY, barber, no education. Can read and write. John claims 2 children but wife Delia claims 3, of which only 2 are living.

      - Feb. 12, 1900: Considerable excitement was caused on Ford street Sunday afternoon by a livery horse owned by Bell Brothers running down that street without a driver. The horse had been driven by John Landry, a young west sider. At the corner of Ford and Isabella streets, the cutter was overturned by the street car track and Landry was thrown out. The horee continued down Ford street, and when nearing Catherine Street turned in on the sidewalk and collided with an iron railing which encircles a flight of steps leading into the basement barber shop of John Thayer. The railing was demolished, but the cutter was only slightly damaged. The horse was uninjured.

      - Delia was born April 1872, age 28, married for seven years. Daughter Leona born June 1894, age 5, in Ohio; son Alfred, born June 1896, age 3, born in Ohio.

      - 1900 census: Ogdensburg: John Thayer, barber, born Nov. 1871, age 28, born in Michigan, resides with Delia, b. April, 1872, 28, in Ohio, with daughter Leona, 5, b. June, 1894 in Ohio and son Alfred, 3, b. June, 1896 in Ohio. They are living at 85 King St. (John's mother Harriet was also living with them there but died in May, 1900.) Living next door to them at 83 King St. is John Thayer's brother-in-law, John W. Como, 42, (who married John's sister Delia; Delia had died the previous November, 1899) and John's mother, Marinda Turrill, 65, and his children Blanche, Earl, and Leona.

      - In 1910, Adelia and children are back in Toledo, without John. Living in Ward 8 are Delia Thayer, 37, head of the family, Leona, 16; Alfred, 14, and Mary, 7, with Mary shown as being born in Ohio but that can't be correct since she was baptized in Ogdensburg. That means they had to be back by 1903. So did John come with them?

      - In 1920, Delia is shown married to John Keating and they reside in Toledo, living with George Baxendale, who is married to Delia's daughter Leona. John Keating is 42, born Ohio as was his father; Delia, 47, born Ohio. The census shows two children named Keating: Adolph, 22, b. Ohio, and Mary Keating, 18, b. Ohio. They in fact are Alfred and Mary Thayer, and I suspect John Keating is in fact John Thayer, since no John Keating is found in the 1910 census in Ohio. John is a steamfitter; George is a press hand working in auto manufac.; Adolph is unemployed, and Mary is a stenographer in an office.

      - In 1930 John "Keating" is no longer with Delia in Toledo. It's Delia Keating, 55; son Alfred Thayer, 33; Delia's daughter Leona, now 35 and her husband George Baxendale, 36, both of whom live with them in Toledo. George is head of the family. He was born in Ohio, with his father born in England and his mother in Ohio. Delia Keating says she's 55. Delia indicates that she is not widowed, but divorced. However, John "Keating" or Thayer is not be found elsewhere in the 1930 census.
