- Wed. Jan., 29, 1890, Sackets Harbor: Mrs. Walling, a sister of Edward Sloman, who died at the residence of T. W. Day on Janh. 16, has in her possession a clipping from a paper of 1805, giving the account of the shipwreck of the vessel that their father and mother embarked in from England, and their narrow escape. It is quite interesting.
The Watertown Reunion, Dec. 3, 1904: Mrs. Walling of Sackets Harbor, widow of John Walling and grandmother of Mrs. Lewis W. Day, celebrated her 97th birthday anniversary on Sunday. Mrs. Walling retains to a remarkable degree her mental faculties and is an interesting person to visit with, her reminiscenses of the past being the history of Sackets Haarbor for almost a century.
The Watertown Reunion, Sat., June 24, 1905: Mrs. Harriet Sloman Walling, widow of John Walling and one of the oldest residents of the county, died Tuesday afternoon at her home in Sackets Harbor, aged 97 years. Mrs. Walling was a life resident of that village, where she was born in 1808, daughter of George and Rachel Sloman, early residents of that section. She was a devout christian and a staunch friend, and was one of the most highly respected and esteemed residents of the Town of Hounsfield. Mrs. Walling is survived by one granddaughter, Mrs. L. W. Day of Sackets Harbor, from whose home the funeral was held Friday afternoon. Burial was made at the village cemetery.
- Watertown, N. Y., June 22. Mrs. Harriet Sloman Walling, Sackets Harbor's oldest resident, is dead at the age of 97 years. She was living in Sackets Harbor during the War of 1812 and recalled many incidents of the attempted British invasion at that point. She carried to her grave a scar from a wound received during the attack.
