- - William H. Polly and wife Delilah likely married in Ontario, Canada where she was born. We don't have birth locations for their first two children (Frederick, b. 1827 and Louisa, b. 1830) but the next four were born in Brockville, Ontario and those that followed, in New York State. William was born in 1804 in Canaan, N.Y. His father moved the family to Russia, Herkimer County, NY in 1811 (he and family are found in the 1810 U.S. census in Canaan) when William was 7, although every reference to his birthplace is Russia. About 1827, he married Delilah Mattison, likely in Ontario, Canada, where they settled down and had at least six children. Shortly after the birth of Dennis in 1839, they moved back to Herkimer County where they are found in the 1840 and 1850 U.S. censuses.
- In the 1861 Canadian census, Delila and children are back in Ontario, Canada where she says she is a widow (she is listed by the name Delila Polly but the children - on the next page of the census report - are listed as Pauley.) All of the children are b. U.S. except the youngest, Francis, 3, b. Upper Canada. So Delia moved back to Canada between 1850-1858. So it is likely that between 1850-58 they divorced, with Delilah going to Canada and William to Jefferson County. Delilah married again between 1862-70.
- 1830 Ontario census has William H. Polley residing at Brockville, Ontario.
- 1832: Canadian Genealogy Index has William H. Polley living at Brockville, Ontario, working as a shoemaker. No info. on family.
- 1840 U.S. census, Herkimer County, NY, William H. Polly is in Russia Township with 1 male under 5, (Likely Dennis;) 1 male 5-9 (likely Isaac;) 1 male 30-39 (William H.); 1 female under 5, (Delila); 1 female 10-14 (Louisa) and one female, 20-29 Delia). Since Frederick should be 13 at this time but does not appear (nor does he show up in any census after this date) it is likely he died prior to 1840.
- 1850 U.S census, Herkimer County, NY: William Polly living in Russia township, Herkimer County, NY where he was raised. He is 46 years old (born in 1804). He is a laborer and was born in New York State. He is living with wife Delia (39), b. Canada; Isaac (16) b. Canada; Delila (14), b. Canada; Dennis (11), b. Canada; Nancy (8), b. NY; son Jefferson (6), b. NY; twin daughters Martha and Mary (4), b. NY; and daughter Amelia (2) b. NY. Since Dennis was born in Canada in 1839 and Nancy in New York State in 1842, they moved from Brockville, Ontario to Herkimer County, NY shortly after Dennis' birth in 1839.
- William and Delilah and children are at Russia in 1850, but are not found in the 1855 NYS census so between 1851-1855, they relocated to Ontario Canada where son Francis was born in 1858. Since William ipregnated Delilah for Francis in 1857, between then and 1860 when William is found alone in NYS, he either divorced Delilah or simply left her in Canada and relocated to Jefferson County, NY.
- 1860 NYS census: William Polly, 54, shoemaker, lives in a hotel in the Town of Lyme, (Cape Vincent) Jefferson County, NY.
- 1861 Canadian census: By 1861, William and Delilah have apparently divorced or seperated. Living in Grenville, Ontario, Canada in a log house are Delila Polley, 49, widowed, b. Upper Canada; Nancy, 20; Mary and Martha, each 16; Cornelia, 13; William, 11, and Francis, 3. After the apparent divorce, Delilah took the children back to Ontario where she and her family were from perhaps for help in raising them. Since the youngest child Francis was born in Ontario, the move from Herkimer County NY back to Ontario took place between 1850 and 1858.)
- 1870 census: William Polley, 63, b. NY, a shoemaker, is living with the Henry T. Norton family at Chaumont, Town of Lyme, Jefferson County.
- 1875 NYS Census: William H. Polly, 70, shoemaker, resides in Lyme, Jefferson, NY with daughter Nancy Harr, 23, and her children Fred Harr, 7 and Millie Harr, 5.
- 1882: William Polly dies at Chaumont, Town of Lyme, Jefferson County. His grave stone reads: William Polly 1805-1882. He is buried in Chaumont Cedar Grove Cemetery, burial ID 48899 (Cedar Grove Old.)
- Note: Various sites have William and Delilah marrying at Morristown, NY but with no documentation. This marriage location may be confused with Delilah's third marriage, which did take place at Morristown.
