  • Notes
    • - Rudolph Cayen was born Louis Rodolphe Pitre in 1868 at Portneuf, on the St. Lawrence River about halfway between Quebec City and Trois-Rivieres. In 1891, he is still at Portneuf with his just-widowed father but the next year, came to Ogdensburg, NY (in the 1900 census he indicates he came to the U.S. in 1892.) In 1897, he married Philomena Robillard in Ogdensburg - Philomena came to Ogdensburg in 1886 at age 15 with her parents. In 1900 Rudolph was a sailor and it is perhaps that occupation which brought him to Ogdensburg since his two siblings appear to have remained in Quebec. He died at a young age - 49 - of heart disease, as did his two sons: John also at age 49 and Edward at 54 - Edward's daughter Elizabeth Cayen Como also died early of heart disease at age 46. This appears to be a situation inherited from Rudolph's mother, Marie Chenard, who died at 37 (his father lived to age 70.)

      - June 10, 1868, Deschambault, baptise Louis Rudolphe, born of the marriage of Jean Pitre, farmer, and Marie Josephine Chenard of this parish. Godfather is Louis Chenard and godmother, Elanire or Celanire Pitre.

      - 1871 St. Alban, Portneuf, Quebec: Johny Pitre 37 (farmer), wife Marie 27, Emma 4, Rodolphe 2.

      - 1881 St. Alban, Portneuf, Quebec: Widower Jean Cayen 50 (day laborer), Emma 14, Rodolphe 12, Damase 9.

      - 1891 Portneuf, Portneuf, Quebec: Widower Johnny Cayen 61 (day laborer), Rodolphe 22, Damase 20.

      - Aug 02, 1897, Notre Dame Church, Ogdensburg, NY: Marriage of Rudolphe Pitre and Philomene Robillard. Rudolphe is 27 years old, white and single. Occupation is navigator. Birthplace is Canada. Father is Jean Baptiste Pitre and mother is Marie Chenard. Pastor for wedding is Rev. P. LaRose. The bride is Philomena Robillard, 26 years old.

      - 1900 U.S. census: Ogdensburg, NY: Rudolph Cayen, sailor, b. March, 1870; Fannie Cayen, both 30. They are residing on Park Street at the intersection of Park and Knox Streets; married 1896.

      - 1910 U.S. census: Radof Kiah, 40, fireman on steamboat, with Fanny, married 15 years; Eddy, 9; John, 7.

      - Rudolph Cayen died Sept. 6, 1917 at 183 N. Water St., Ogdensburg, N.Y. He was born 20 June 1868 in Canada. His father was William Cayen, born Canada, and his mother was Emma Dishaw, born Canada. (This information is incorrect. There is no question as to Rudolph's birth to Alexis Pitre and Marie Josephine Chenard.)

      - Sept. 7, 1917: Rodolph Cayen, aged 49 years, died at his home, 188 North Water Street, last evening after a short illness. He had been feeling unwell the past few weeks but his condition was not considered alarming until yesterday forenoon when he became suddenly worse and soon passed away. He was born in Canada and came here about 30 years ago. He was employed as fireman on board various vessels, his last berth being on the steamer F. P. Jones of the George Hall company's fleet. Mr. Cayen is survived by his wife and two sons, John and Edward, also a sister, Mrs. Emma Darove (actually, Darveau) and a brother, Nelson Cayen, residing in lower Canada (Rudolph did not have a brother named Nelson though his sister Emma Darveau's husband was named Nelson. He did have a brother Damase, who is last found in the 1891 Canadian census, living with his widowed father and brother Rudolph at Portneuf.) The funeral will be held from the house tomorrow morning at 8:30 and a half hour later at Notre Dame church.

      - NY Bureau of Vital Statistics: Death of Rudolph Cayen, 183 N. Water St., in Ogdensburg, N.Y. Date of death is Sept. 6, 1917. Cause of death is something of the heart. Date of birth is given as June 20, 1868, in Canada. His father is William Cayen, born in Canada, and his mother is Emma Dishaw, born in Canada. (This information is incorrect.) His occupation is listed as fireman. The death certificate is signed by Eddie Cayen. Date of burial is given as Sept 8. 1917 in Notre Dame Cemetery.

      - From Dorothy Cayen's Bible: Joseph Rudolph Cayen, father of Edward & John died in 1916.

      - Rudolph Cayen worked primarily as a fireman on board various ships that sailed the St. Lawrence. He came to the U.S. around 1887. He was a member of Notre Dame Church. His obituary mentions that he had a brother named Nelson living in lower Canada at the time of his death.

      - Notre Dame Church, Ogdensburg, gives marriage date of "Rudol. phum Pitre dit Cahien et Philomenam Robillard" as Jan. 2, 1897. "Testes Emeliaus robillard et Gumjius Lamoureuce" which means witnesses, her father Emilien Robillard and his friend, George Lovely, whose daughter Ida would marry Philomena's brother John.

      - No Cayens appear in the 1896 and earlier Ogdensburg city directories.
      - 1898-99 Randolph Cayen, fireman, h. 6 Park; 1900-01, Randolph (Delia) Cayen, fireman, h. 146 Knox

      - Ogdensburg Advance, March, 1898: Joseph Cayen born to Mr. and Mrs. Adolphe Cayen, and died the same month.

      - Rudolph should be buried in Notre Dame Cemetery since he was a member of the Notre Dame Church, but we have not found a stone for him. Earl Como said that the current Notre Dame Cemetery was put in around 1930 and that prior to that the members of this Church were buried across the street in the old French Cemetery that is now overgrown with a small forest.
