  • Notes
    • -- Louis N. Laflair was born Louis Napoleon Beique dit Lafleur at Montreal, and baptized at the Basilique of Notre Dame, April 19, 1823, the son of Jacques Francois Beique dit Lafleur and Catherine Paquet dit Lavallee. Francois Paquet was godfather and Catherine Goudreau godmother.

      - Basilica of Notre Dame, Montreal: Nov. 9, 1858, marry Louis Napoleon Beique dit Lafleur, first son of Jacques Beique dit Lafleur and Catherine Paquet dit Lavalle, of this parish, and Appolline Troie dit Lafranchise, minor daughter of Charles Troie dit Lafranchise and Appoline Paquet dit Lavalle, of this parish.

      - 1859: Montreal: Louis Napoleon Beique dit Lafleur born of Louis and Appolline (dies July 3, 1860.)

      - 1861: Montreal: Marie Angelina Beique dit Lafleur born of Louis and Appolline (dies Sept. 27, 1861.)

      - 1861 Canadian census: At Montreal are N. Lafleur, 37, and A. Troy, 21. No children shown

      - It would appear that Louis left Appolline no later than April, 1870, and married or moved in with the widowed Mary Polly and her two children; Mary was impregnated for Mary Violet about April, 1870 and gave birth to Mary Violet Feb. 1, 1871. In the 1871 Canadian census, Lewis is listed both with Appolline in Montreal, and Mary at Kemptville.

      - 1871 Canadian census: At Kemptville, Leeds and Grenville North (census taken April 2, 1871) are Napoleon Bac (Beique), 41, b. Quebec, cooper; Mary, 25, b. Russia (township in Herkimer County, NY;) Herada Oritha, 6, b. U.S.; Joseph Henry, 3, b. U.S.; Mary, 3 mos., b. Ontario. The 1871 census was taken April 2, 1871, and places Louis Laflair at Kemptville with Mary, using the name Napoleon Beique (spelled "Bac" in the census) while, in the same census, he is shown as still in Montreal with Appoline.

      - 1871 Canadian census: At Montreal East, St. Louis Ward, are Louis Lafleur, 50, and Appoline Lafleur, 30, residing with Hypolite Piche, 33; wife Leocadie, 33, and children Polydore 15 and Hormidas. 14.
There is no question that it's the same man - at Montreal, the ages of Louis and Appoline are correct, as is the unusual age difference between them; at Kemptville, while his age is incorrect, it's the same Louis Laflair who stays with Mary until he dies, and is identified in his obituary with the correct parents.
At Montreal his occupation is listed as tonnellier (barrel maker,) at Kemptville, his occupation is listed as cooper (barrel maker.) My assumption is that Louis was actually with Mary, and Appoline, living with another family in Montreal, simply listed him as her husband, though he was not present in the home with her. Perhaps she did not know his whereabouts and expected him to return to her.

      - 1881 Canadian census, City of Ottawa: Louis Lafleur, 59; Mary Lafleur, 36; Henriette Lafleur, 16; Frank Lafleur, 13; Mary Lafleur, 10; and Catherine Lafleur, five months. All children were born in Ontario, Canada. The children are Henrietta Brundage, b. 1865; Joseph Henry Brundage, b. 1867 (who as an adult went by the name Frank LaFlair) and Louis and Mary's children, Mary and Catherine.

      - The family emigrated to the U.S. about 1887.

      - 1897: Louis dies at Ogdensburg: Lewis LaFlair, son of James LaFlair (born in France) and Catherine (born in Canada) died 9 December 1897. NYS Bureau of Vital Statistics: Death of Lewis N. LaFlair, aged 74, on 9 Dec 1897. Burial was in French Cemetery on 11 Dec 1897. Cause of death was Bright's disease. Lewis was born in Canada to James LaFlair (born in France) and Catherine LaFlair (born in Canada). He had been in the U.S. for 30 years. He lived at 96 Pickering St.

      - 1900 U.S. census, Ogdensburg, NY, Polly LaFlair, born Jan., 1845, is living at 94 Pickering St. She was mother of 12 children, 4 of whom are still alive. Emma, born April 1886, is still living with her.

      - Dorothy Walling Cayen's Bible: Louis N. LeFlair died Dec 9, 1897, age 75 years. Born April 19, 1822. Father of Catherine Walling. Mother Mary Polley O'Hagan.

      - Catherine Walling's burial book: Catherine's father was Louis LaFlair. Louis's mother was named Catherine. Catherine LaFlair Walling was born in Ottawa, 26 Nov 1886.

      - The 1900 census entry for Catherine Walling indicates she came to the U.S. around 1884.
