  • Notes
    • - Seigneurial notary in St Ours and Contrecoeur from 1702 to 1706. He was appointed notary June 13, 1702. He is quoted in Contrecoeur July 29, 1682 and a contract notary Menard May 15, 1689. The register containing his marriage was destroyed in an attack by the Iroquois in the early 18th century. Pierre was a "hussier" or sheriff for St Ours. At that time Marie Anne Couillard brutally murdered her husband Lachume with the help of her lover Piersre Viau dit Larose, a soldier of the company St Ours. The murder took place 28 Feb 1702. As hussier, Pierre Benoit investigated this murder and Marie Anne Couillard confessed to her crime. There was no notary in the St Pie and Contrecoeur areas. The governor appointed Pierre Benoit, age 34, as notary. He was required to bring the couple for judgment at Ville Marie. Pierre Benoit was appointed notary 14 Jun 1702. Pierre Viau dit Larose was condemned to death and died by hanging at Quebec 17 Oct 1702. Marie Anne Couillard escaped justice either by escaping to New England with the help of her uncle, Pierre Laporte. The latter was also accused of killing her. Either way, she was not brought to justice in Monreal. The last name of the line came from Saint Benoit de Nursie, who founded the order of the Benedictines about the year 529. Benoit, from the word beni, which means blessed, became a very popular first name and a family name as well.
Paul Benoit dit Livernois emigrated to Quebec 23 May 1653 aboard the Saint Nicolas as a member of the Grande Recrue brought over by Marguerite Bourgeoys and Jeanne Mance. He is found in the 1666 census at Montreal, Ile de Montreal, Quebec. His residence in 1686 was at Longueuil. He was born at Chatillon-en-Bazois, Chateau-Chinon, Nevers, Nivemais-Charpentier, France. Occupation: charpentier, habitant. Enlisted to go to Canadea on 23 May 1653. Originally called Paul Benoit said Niveemois who changed it to Livernois. On March 23, 1635, in Lafleche, he committeed with five companion carpenters by contract to move to Ville Marie for five years. Each was to receive a sword and a pistol and a hundreds pounds annually. They were recruited by Le Royer from La Dauversiere and Chomedey de Maisonneuve.
Paul de Chomedey and the basset notary acted as witnesses at his wedding. On May 12, 1659, Mr. de Maisonneuve signed an act of concession for a land of 30 acred located "below the hillside Saint-Louis." In the 1667 census, Paul cultivates 12 acres.
