Notes |
- - Sandy is anglicized for St. Denis. Some of the children of Eli used that surname.
- 1860 U.S. census: Eli, (probably Elisha) 26, shoemaker, b. Canada; Lucy, 23, b. Canada; in Gouverneur, NY with Mary A., 3, and Melinda, 2 mos (b. April, 1860) b. NY, and Angeline Sandy, 58, b. Canada.
- 1871 Canada census: Eli, 29, shoemaker; Lucy, 24, (1847) both born Ontario; Amelia, 12, b. US; Eli, 8 and John, 6, b. Ontario; and Edward, 5, b. US.
- 1891 Canadian census. Eli, 53, and "Elizabeth" (Lucy) 47, (1844) are in Brockville, with Sarah Smith, 81. Elizabeth says father and mother were born in Ontario, as was she in 1844. Sarah is a domestic.
- In 1901 Canadian census: Eli Sandy, 65, b. Oct. 31, 1835, Canada, and wife Elizabeth, 60, b. Jan. 24, 1841, Canada, reside in Brockville, Ontario.
- Elizabeth Sandy died March 18, 1910, at Elizabethtown, Leeds County, Ontario. Born June 24, 1840. Name of father and mother and birthplaces not known.
- July 23, 1871, Lucy, born to Eli Sandy and Lucy Rear, he a shoemaker, at Brockville, Leeds County, Ontario.
- It would appear that a John E. Sandy found in Watertown, NY is Eli's son. John and and Anna Sandy are found in the 1913 Watertown directory residing at 129 Wooodruff St. Living with them is Eli, a shoemaker. 1910 U.S. census shows John born Canada in 1863 as were his parents, and as were wife Anna's parents. That's close enough to our John Sandy, son of Eli, born 1865, Canada, to convice me it's Eli's son. As well, while John shows up in the 1871 Canadian census with his parents at age 26, he is not found in later Canadian censuses. And, John has two children, one a daughter named Lucy (after her grandmother and aunt?) I suspect that after his wife Elizabeth died in 1910, Eli moved back to the U.S. with son John. Eli shows up in the 1911, 1912 and 1913 directories. But in the 1915 New York State census, he's no longer with them and likely has died - so he died between 1913-1915 at Watertown. I can find no death record for him.
With John and Anna in the 1915 census are daughter Lucy, 27, and son William E., 25. Lucy was born in 1888. Since in the 1910 census Eli is about 46 and his wife Anna 39, she was born in 1871. When Lucy was born, Anna was only 17. So John and Anna was were likely married in 1888. Since Lucy was born in NY, it's likely they married in NY - no record found. In 1930, Lucy is still at Watertown, living with her father John, then 65, and a widower.
