Notes |
- We have proof that William Polly was born in 1742 at Hebron, Tolland County, CT, and that on Jan. 17, 1771, he married Abigail Cushman, who also was born at Hebron. These facts are confirmed by CT town records, as are the births of their first five children at Hebron amd William's first marriage at Hebron March 20, 1765, to Sarah Matoon, which produced two children.
- Connecticut Town Marriage Records show William Polly's marriage to Abigail Cushman on Jan. 17, 1771 - William Cushman born Feb. 26, 1723, Plympton, MA. Married Sarah Holloway Sept. 3, 1747, Plympton (she born June 19, 1726, Pembroke, MA)in Hebron, Conn., and marriage March 20, 1765, to Sarah Matoon in Hebron, Conn. In his marriage to Abigail, the record shows both were from Hebron, and married there.

- Deaths: Mr. William Polley, suddenly, on 28 Nov 1816, age 73. He married (1) Sarah MATTSON, 20-Mar-1765 in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut, born about 1745, died 14-Feb-1768 in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut. He married (2) Abigail CUSHMAN, 17-Jan-1771 in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut, born about 1751, died about 1811.
- There is some information to be found that Abigail Cushman who married William Polley is the daughter of William Cushman and Sarah Haloway. This is not true.
CT town records have Abigail Cushman born Feb. 28, 1751 at Plympton (Plymouth) MA to William and Sarah Haloway Cushman. William was the son of Lt. Josiah Cushman and was born Feb. 26, 1732. He lived for a time in Plympton and then moved to Connecticut, apparently Brooklyn, CT. Sarah Holoway was b. June 19, 1726, at Pembroke, Mass, and married: Sept. 3, 1747, Plympton, Mass.
This Abigail married at Brooklyn, CT Jan. 31, 1771 Robert How. She died Sept. 23, 1803 at Danielson, Windham County, CT and is buried in the Westfield Cemetery.
- There also is information that Abigail who married William Polley is the daughter of William and Abigail Cushman. This also is untrue.
The CT town birth records (Barbour Collection) show Abigail Cushman, born Oct. 27, 1743, at Willington, also in Tolland County, CT, and died Nov. 18, 1825 at Barre VT. Research shows this Abigail was the daughter of William Cushman, 1710-1777, and Abigail Lee, 1713-1803; and that William is the son of Eleazar Cushman and Elizabeth Coombs; and that Eleazar is the son of Thomas Cushman and Mary Allerton.
However, this Abigail married Nathan Blodgett April 21, 1736 at Stafford, Tolland, CT and they had many children from 1763-1786.
- There seems little doubt that Abigail Cushman who married William Polley is the daughter of Solomon Cushman and Abigail/Ruth Holmes. There is a verified line from Solomon Cushman's ancestors and of his birth Sept. 9, 1717 to Benjamin Cushman and Sarah Eaton. A Mayflower descendancy list has Solomon Cushman, b. Sept. 9, 1718 at Plympton, Plymouth, MA to Benjamin and Sarah, and who married Ruth Holmes, 1719-1765, at age 22, in 1740, in Mass. He later married Priscilla Cushman, 1749-1823. In 1790 he lived in Granby, Hartford, CT. Ruth Holmes was b. June 22, 1719, Scituate, Plymouth, MA and died 1765 at Hebron, Tolland, Conn. she was the daughter of John Holmes and Susanna Randall.
Clearly, with Ruth Holmes Cushman's death at Hebron, her family lived there; Hebron is where Abigail Cushman who married William Polley was born, and where they married. In fact, at least one child of Solomon's second marriage to Abigail Holmes, Silas Cushman, was born at Hebron in 1767.
After the marriage of Solomon Cushman and Abigail/Ruth Holmes, they resided at Granby or Simsbury, Conn. and reportedly had three children. Two of them are Jerusha, b. 1756, and Eleazur, 1758. Jerusha was born unk. place and died at Turnbridge, VT in 1840. But Eleazur (according to JAC) was born either Jan. 17, 1758, or same day 1759, or May 20, 1759, at Hebron, CT according to Hebon vital records, vol. 2, p. 157., and died Bristol, VT 1813.
So if Eleazur was born in Hebron, the third child likely was too, and likely was Abigail.
