      - Bible of Dorothy Walling Cayen states John Cayen was born Jan 29, 1903, died Jan 13, 1952.

      - Ogdensburg Advance News, Sunday, Jan. 20, 1952: John Cayen, 48, was found dead Jan. 13, 1952 at his home, 820 Lake St. Mrs. Cayen had stayed at the home of her son Saturday night and upon calling her husband Sunday morning received no response. Thinking he had gone to church, she proceeded to go into the apartment through a window and found him dead in bed. Dr. F. E. Clark, city health officer, and Dr. R. Stacy, coroner, were called. An autopsy was performed at the A. Barton Hepburn Hospital. Death was attributed to a heart condition. Born in Ogdensburg Jan. 29, 1903, Mr. Cayen was a son of Joseph Cayen and Fannie Robillard. He was educated in the local schools and was twice married. His first wife was the former Mabel Mattheson of Brockville, who died in 1927. They had one daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Woods of Syracuse. In 1946, he married Amanda Cardinal Heagle in a ceremony performed by the Rt. Rekv. Msgr. A.D. Charbonneau at Notre Dame Church. Mr. Cayen was a sailor on the Great Lakes for many years, a second assistant engineer on the Boland and Cornelins Lines. He resigned because of ill health in June, 1950. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. Surviving besides his daughter and wife are three stepsons, Ernest and Edward, Ogdensburg, and Raymond Heagle, Salt Lake City; one brother, Edward Cayen, Ogdensburg; three stepbrothers, Moses and George Baker, Syracuse and Arthur of Ogdensburg; and two step-sisters, Mrs. Lena Larock of Syracuse and Mrs. Arthur Denny of Ogdensburg, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 8:30 from the Lalonde Funeral Home and at 9 a.m. at Notre Dame Church. The Rev. Robert Giroux celebrated the High Mass of Requiem. Bearers, all members of the Loyal Order of Moose, were Fred Booth, Samuel Huett, Emerson Gagnon, Charles Premo, Reuben Garso and John Wood. Burial followed in the family plot in Notre Dame Cemetery.

      - Dorothy Walling Cayen said that John worked on the boats on the St. Lawrence River. He married Mabel Matheson and they had a daughter Mary Ellen Cayen who married Peter Woods and that they had 15 kids. Later he married Maude (Amanda) Cardinal - Maude had children by a previous marriage but she and John did not have any.

      - E-mail July 31, 2009: I cannot document this, but I was told by my mother (Sandra Lee Woods, daughter of Mary Ellen Cayen Woods) that Mabel Matheson died giving birth to Mary Ellen Cayen. Mary Cayen used to say that she wanted 10 kids because she grew up as an only child (she had 15.) So that should put the year of her death at 1927. (Mary Ellen was born Jan. 18, 1927.) - 1925 N.Y. State census, St. Lawrence County, Ogdensburg: John Cayen is 22 years old and working as a sailor. He is living at 820 Lake St. with his mother Fannie Baker (52) and step-father Andrew Baker (67.)

      - Advance News of Jan. 25, 1942: John Cayen has received his appointment as assistant engineer on the steamship J. L Reiss for the 1942 navigation season.

      - Advance News of March 24, 1946: Mrs. Elizabeth Heagle (the former Amanda Elizabeth Cardinal) and John Cayen of this city married yesterday at Notre Dame.
